General
Shell Shocked is a 2v2 couch VS game made in Unreal Engine 5.
The project lasted 8 weeks in a team of 14 1st year students.
My role on the team was technical designer and QA lead.
I primarily used Unreal Engine 5 blueprints.
Throughout the project I had 3 main responsibilities
- Implement and develop the ball movement
- Design and iterate the “shell-stun” mechanic.
- Organize and host focus tests.
Implement and develop the ball movement and the “Shell-Stun” mechanic
As a games designer, I was tasked with creating the ball movement. I did this together with one other technical designer.
Working on the ball movement helped me learn more about collision and physics in Unreal Engine. In the end the ball moves smoothly and as expected.
I also helped with setting up the stun ability. I worked primarily on setting up the launching of the shells.
This went rather well as it closely related to a “shooting” system I have worked on before.
Development of the game halfway through, showing development on the ball movement and stun mechanics.
Organize and host over 15 focus tests.
After the implementations of the ball movement and the Shell-Stun, the team started running focus tests. I took initiative in organizing and hosting these tests.
Overall they were very successful as we had more testing sessions than most other teams in the same year.
These focus tests primarily focused on the crab’s movement and abilities. They also considered the game feel, gameplay experience, and other important aspects.
Release
Shell Shocked was released publicly on June 12th 2023 on Itch.io at roughly 160 downloads.
While only having 1 comment on our itch page, the verbal feedback at release was very positive.
