Average Vegetable Man is a fast paced 2D platformer.
My role on the team was games designer generalist
Released in 2023 on Itch.io
Spanning 8 weeks of development time
Made with Unreal Engine 5
This project my deliverables were:
- Developing the moving platform objects
- Designing the health and respawn system
- Create level 4 using the moving platforms as the main level mechanic.
Developing the moving platform objects and the respawn system
I created the moving platforms as seen in level 4 (AKA “Alex”). The moving platforms can be placed anywhere and the speed/duration of them can be edited per instance.
They apply their velocity to the player creating a new way to use the platforms.
Overall the technical difficulty isn’t too high by making the most use out of small systems.
I also made the respawn system. It checks if the player is past it. Then, it sets the new spawn for the player.

Create level 4 using the moving platforms as the main level mechanic.
I worked on level 4. I used the moving platforms I made myself. I also used the velocity mechanic to create interesting obstacles for the player to overcome.
The level was meant to be roughly 1-2 minutes of gameplay.
I worked on level 4. As part of the brief I had to use the feature I made, in this case the moving platforms.
For the level, I used the kishotenketsu structure. This allows the player to be challenged appropriately. It also allows me to properly introduce and use the feature.
I was able to use the moving platform feature to its fullest, making special use of the velocity transfer mechanic.
The level was supposed to be between 1-2 minutes. This perfectly lined up with my level.
Full playthrough of my level, showcasing the moving platforms.
