The Final Print is a Detective narrative game made in Unreal Engine 5.
I had 2 roles on this project; Audio design & technical design
Released on Steam in 2025 following an initial beta 8 weeks prior
The project lasted 32 weeks in a team of 22 3rd year students.
The tools I used are Unreal Engine 5, Ableton Suite 11 and Wwise
My responsibilities and deliverables were:
- Design, implement and engineer all audio
- Create prototypes for features and systems
- Help with technical fixes for bugs or feature design
Design, implement and engieer all audio
As the only audio designer on the team I worked on designing the UI, gameplay, ambient and outer sounds effects in the game as well as implement the outsourced voice acting and music.
My pipeline consisted of identifying audio requirements -> finding placeholders -> design sounds -> implement and test -> iterate and refine.
This process was used for all sound effects in the game and lead to the audio fitting the scene and gameplay intention.
Besides sound effects I also implemented the music and voice acting. Both of these required some techical implementation as they functioned differently than most sounds.
My role as audio designer improved my communication with other departments, primarily:
- Narrative design – As the game takes place in 1940s Harlem, the audio had to reflect that, the narrative team and I worked on finding the best way to convey this. The voice acting was also organized and sent by the narrative team.
- Programming – To make full usage of Wwise, I worked together with programmers on making systems that ensure the audio is sent and played the best way possible.
Working on creating space in a scene
Creating reverb for different environments
Create prototypes for features and systems – WIP
In the concepting and pre-production phase I focussed more heavily on system design and creating protoypes for potential features in the game.
Most importantly the fast traveling system that became an important component in the game.
Release
The game initially released as a demo on steam before its full release 4 weeks later.
After its full release there were a couple of path updates and one major content update: voice acting (where I was heavily involved in)
Since release The Final Print has:
- Nominated for Best Student Game (DGA)
- Finalist for Rookie of the Year 2025 (The Rookies
- Won Best Student Game 2025 (DGA)
